ABOUT SOUTH SUDAN

Back then, South Sudan and Sudan were one country. They had to seperate because of war. The war started in 1983. South Sudan was mostly made up of Black Christians, while the north part of Sudan was made up of Arabic Muslims. The North part of Sudan wanted the South part to follow their religion. The South didn't want to follow the religion, and they wanted to be free to follow what they wanted. This led to a very long civil war, known as the second civil war, that lasted decades (the first civil war was a seperate conflict).

During the war, the North attacked the South. A lot of families were seperated. Thousands of boys were lost. For years the survivors would walk all day, every day. A lot of them died due to diferent reasons. They could've died from starvation, not drinking enough water, attacked by wild animals. or shot. Finally, on July 9th, 2011, the war ended and South Sudan gained independence. Some of the boys who survived the war without their families, were able to live in the United States. There they are known as the Lost Boys of South Sudan. For more information on them, please see "About the Lost Boys" on the top menu.
